[personal profile] voldemort posting in [community profile] downtime
for those of you who don't know, an unknown person/group disliked A SINGLE USER so much that they attacked multiple websites yesterday. twitter, google, and facebook have recovered, but good ol' livejournal has not. this is both hilarious and annoying, obviously.

an in-depth look at the situation can be found here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8189162.stm

I was a little pissed that none of my sites were working...and when I heard it was to shut one person up I became sort of mystified. I hear that LJ is working for some people, though. Early yesterday morning I could get it to load a few times out of sheer determination and two of my friends had no problem with it...

Except some of us are still blocked! I had lj back briefly on Thursday night, but it was gone again on Friday morning. The difference was that this time down for everyone or just me? claimed that it *was* just me. Someone on my flist had the same problem and fixed it after resetting his router and IP address (I tried the same thing and not only failed to fix the problem, but also screwed up my secured network -- oops). A few other people responded to one of his lj/dw cross-posts that they too can't get on LJ. Did some of us get selectively blocked?? So weird! I don't even live in the same country as the guy on my flist. I've been Googling, but it seems that no one out there is talking about this...

I am on a wireless connection. I'm also SUPER clueless about this kind of thing, which is maybe why it didn't occur to me to ask if there would be a different effect by doing this with a wireless router (my knowledge about computer hardware < 0). My techie guru guy is being driven over my mum right now to help us fix my mistakes, and I'm hoping he can help me with the lj problem as well.

I'm glad that someone is talking about this over at lj! I'm very frustrated about being left in the dark. I can't find any way to contact the support team without having access to a livejournal.com page.

Uhm, it might if I knew what it was!

Geez, I really wish Lj had an *off-site* resource for tech issues. Or even, ya know, updates. Even their twitter hasn't updated in over a year... :( The only downside to DW is that most people/comms I follow still haven't made it over yet.

Thanks for creating this comm at least! Here's hoping more people track it down.

I agree, they need better off-site support, especially if they know many people won't have access to the site. I haven't had access since the attack took place. This whole thing has finally made me use my invite and join dreamwidth. I hope if a similar thing ever happens here, DW will have the sense to provide off-site support. I was completely in the dark until I came across this com. Thank you [personal profile] voldemort.

Ooh, that reminds me... I have 4 invites available for whomever wants one!

I'm also finally back up on LJ, hopefully for good, but not by any intervention of my own. They did eventually update their off-site status page. I know they were probably still dealing with a lot of fallout from the attacks and busy with that, but having worked in an extremely high-paced and stressful customer service environment, I know just how quickly frustration can be dealt with by letting people know that you know they're having a problem and you're working on fixing it. Uncertainty and confusion just drives most people batty, and it can be a deceptively simple thing to deal with. /2cents

Agreed about the need for off-site support. Funny that this made you use your dreamwidth invite because this made me actually send out dreamwidth invites. :)

I'm just bopping around randomly on DW

DW does have a twitter account that status updates go to:

http://twitter.com/dreamwidth

It wouldn't help much in cases like this when Twitter is also down due to an attack, but at least there is one offsite backup.

Livejournal has been back up for me since around 9 PM EST. I'm hoping that it's back for good, lets see.
